James Findlay, called in 1984 and appointed silk in 2008, practices mainly in local government & administrative, planning & environment and licensing work. He is a member of both PEBA and ALBA. His practice currently comprises a significant number of appearances in Courts at all levels, and at public inquiries.

In Chambers and Partners 2010 he is noted as a leading silk in Local Government ("gentlemanly touch in court ensures that he is always highly effective and a good choice for any authority seeking help"), Environment (“regarded as a skilful practitioner when it comes to waste matters”) and Licensing work ("brings clarity and intelligibility" to all his cases”).

He is also currently recognised as a talented new QC in the latest Legal 500 (September 2009), noted under Planning, Licensing ("able to assimilate legal arguments which are open to debate in newly developing areas of law"), Environment and Administrative and Public law ("first-rate"). The previous edition of the Legal 500 (2008) had also singled him out as a leading junior in Planning and Licensing and as a junior he was consistently ranked in Administrative & Public and Environmental.

James completed the Scottish Bar exams in 2008 and was called as an Advocate in November 2008. He is now a member of Terra Firma chambers in Edinburgh and has appeared in Scotland at public inquiries and before the Court of Session.
