
Geoffrey Stephenson was called to the Bar in 1971.
He has extensive experience of advising and representing on a broad range of issues relating to the work of local authorities, public and regulatory bodies and government departments. With a particular specialism in planning, compulsory purchase, highways, consumer, environmental, trading standards, health and safety, financial administration and property law. Acts in all courts from Magistrates' to House of Lords, with particular emphasis upon judicial review and similar proceedings, for both the statutory bodies and individuals affected by decisions. Has advised, represented or acted against many major retailers and manufacturers in consumer, food safety, environmental and health and safety matters.
The most recent edition of Chambers and Partners (2010) states that 'clients cannot speak highly enough of him. They state: "In court he commands the respect of his opponents and is very well received by judges and magistrates. He gets through not by arrogance or bullying but by charm, knowledge and skill."'
In the 2009 edition Geoffrey is commended for his 'in-depth knowledge of the operational side of retail'. A lawyer who 'isolates the key issues and gives crystal clear arguments'.
The 2008 edition comments that Geoffrey is 'a well-known and respected figure in this sector, acting for local authorities, manufacturers and retailers such as Somerfield and Homebase.'
The Legal 500 2009 continues to rank Geoffrey for Consumer law with the September 2007 edition describing Geoffrey as “renowned for his consumer work in the retail field for both public and private sectors.”
